May is Stroke Awareness Month. My daughter suffered a stroke when she was 13 years old. We didn't immediately think it was a Stroke due to her young age and she was originally misdiagnosed with Bell's Palsy. Within 24 hours, after seeing a neurologist, it was soon discovered her symptoms were due to a Stroke. She is now 18, in College and thriving, however precious time was wasted from the onset of symptoms to treatment which could have led to a much worse outcome. Strokes can happen at any age and it is important to know the risk factors and recognize the signs! This is why during the Month of May I am raising money for the American Stroke Association (A division of the American Heart Association) in order to help this organization Spread Awareness and Save Lives!!

In honor of what would have been my Dad's 67 birthday, I'm raising money for Brain Cancer Research. My dad, Peter Hughes VandenBerg, was diagnosed with brain cancer April 12, 2007 and met this challenge, as he did his entire life, with Faith and Courage, and the support of his family and friends "Team Vandy". As I've become a father myself, I have a new respect for his dedication to family and how hard it must have been to be present with us while battling cancer. My father passed away at 3:33am and my son was born at 3:33am. Life comes full circle. I'm raising money so we get one step closer to finding a cure for brain cancer.

Help support my team, the Swittx Sunflowers for this year's Relay for Life of Gwinnett, presented by Primerica and Northside Hospital Cancer Institute. When my wife, Sara was diagnosed with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma in 2022, our world was turned upside down. It was a rare, aggressive cancer mostly found in children, but it was even more rare and even more aggressive in young adults. Research and treatments were limited. When she passed away 9 months later, I pledged to direct my energy to helping fund research for cancers like hers. "Switt" is a mashup of her first and last name, Sara Wittenzellner. "Swittx" was the online name she used for her social media and livestreams. The sunflower was her favorite flower, what she called the members of her online community, and, ironically, a symbol of sarcoma awareness and hope. So in August 2023, I started the Swittx Sunflowers Relay for Life team. Swittx Sunflowers is a #GoldTogether team, which means 100% of the funds we raise is directed to funding research for childhood and young adult cancers, such as rhabdomyosarcoma, which took my wife, 29 years of age, after only 9 months of marriage.

We achieve this goal by purchasing state-of-the-art equipment for Polish hospitals and clinics. We have also initiated and helped to run eight nationwide medical programmes, which aim to transform medicine in the country systematically. Jerry Ray Woods Jr., 53 years old of Clifton Park, NY, passed away on October 29, 2024. Born in 1971 in Stow, OH to Louise and Jerry Woods. He was a devoted husband to Dione Woods and a loving father to Samantha and Brianna Woods. Jerry was hard-working and dedicated. He spent 30 years working as an electrical engineer for ASML, where he was known for his leadership and dependability. Throughout his time at ASML, Jerry made lifelong friends who would describe him as the kind of person who took care of others and made everyone feel comfortable. Jerry was the kind of friend who noticed the little things and went out of his way to make sure his friends and family were taken care of. He always made time for his family and his passions, despite his many responsibilities. Though Jerry may not have liked being the center of attention, he deserves to have his long years of fatherly love honored. He was a man of integrity and kindness, who always knew how to make everyone smile. Jerry left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. Jerry's hobbies and interests helped define who he was. He enjoyed everything from camping, fishing, biking and hunting to running, cooking and playing golf. Some of the most memorable vacations were spent in the Outer Banks with his family and dearest friends. As his children grew older and played sports, he was dedicated and committed in supporting them by either coaching, volunteering his time, or just being a spectator. He loved watching them swim and play softball or volleyball. From a young age, Jerry was an unwavering fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes and Saturdays were spent watching them play. If you knew Jerry, he was a foodie and beer connoisseur. A typical weekend involved Jerry cooking or smoking food on the grill for his closest family and friends. He loved meeting up with his running group, The Clifton Park Beer Runners, and enjoying a beer at The Other One. His love for cooking was something he shared with his friends and family, leaving a mark on us that will never fade. He is survived by his spouse Dione Woods, his children Samantha and Brianna Woods, his parents Louise and Jerry Woods, his sister Angela Burgess, his nieces and nephews Shelby and Kyle Burgess, Amanda Smith, Katherine Huffman, Tyler Driver, Cassidy Wallace, and Gregory Wallace, as well as many friends and extended family members who will miss him dearly. A period of visitation will take place at St. Edward the Confessor on Monday, November 4, 2024 from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon, immediately followed by funeral mass at 12:00 noon. We find comfort in knowing that Dad's legacy lives on through the lessons he taught us, the love he shared, and the memories we will cherish forever. Natalia is 4 years old and is a Clifton Park resident. She is currently undergoing chemo for a brain tumor which is a complication of her NF1 diagnosis. Neurofibromatosis (NF) is the most common genetic disorder caused by a single gene and affects three times as many people as Muscular Dystrophy, Huntington's Disease, Tay-Sachs and Cystic Fibrosis combined. This year, Women@Shutterstock is excited to organize the second annual virtual Women@Walkathon to raise money and awareness for breast cancer survivors. It’s a great way to get engaged and give back, and everyone is invited to participate! Here is how it’ll work: 1. The Walkathon will be live from October 12 - November 8 and will be a fully virtual event. You can walk in a park, on the sidewalk, on a treadmill…really anywhere that works for you! 2. Choose a distance to walk (or run!) —1 mile, 5K, 10K or more if you’d like! 3. Take a picture of yourself during your walk/run or after you’ve finished, and upload it to @erg_women on Slack. Please include a quick sentence or two about why you participated—for research, in honor of a friend or family member, or any other reason. 4. World Diabetes Day, recognized annually on November 14th, is the world's largest diabetes awareness campaign. According to the International Diabetes Foundation, approximately 573 million people are living with diabetes around the globe. The theme for World Diabetes Day 2024 is "Diabetes and well-being" which highlights the importance of access to critical diabetic care in conjunction with achieving physical, emotional, and mental well-being. The following nonprofits are doing the critical work to raise awareness, assist those living with diabetes to access supplies and medication, and educate the public about diabetes with the ultimate goal of finding a cure.

My 8 year old daughter has a progressive incurable metabolic disease. Little by little this disease is destroying her brain and ability to function and she will pass away prematurely. Metabolic diseases are one of the leading causes of death among children in the Netherlands. The Metakids foundation is raising money to fund research into metabolic diseases. The mission of Metakids is to do everything they can to ensure that in 10 years, half of metabolic diseases can be treated. So that one day a cure for metabolic diseases can be found and all children can have a bright future. According the the KWF '1 out of 2 people in the Netherlands receive the diagnosis of Cancer, money is needed to make sure there is good health care and research to help these people.' I think everyone knows someone who received the diagnosis of Cancer. For me these people include my mother in law, uncles, aunts and my grandmother. Thinking of these people made me want to do something for them. Therefore, I decided I would run the Rotterdam Marathon to raise money for the KWF. The Fit4Surgery foundation was established in 2016 by a group of surgeons. Fueled by their daily practice they saw the importance of physical and mental fitness of their patients. An increasing support was felt that improving health should be an integrated part of medical treatment. A prehabilitation program is a program for patients who need major surgery or invasive treatment. The program consists of physical training, improving diet, treatment of comorbidities (like heart disease or diabetes), mental guidance and help to quit smoking and drinking alcohol. This results in an improved condition when surgery or treatment starts and subsequently improved surgical outcomes and recovery. Data shows that prehabilitation can prevent up to 40% of complications! Prehabilitation is not (yet) standard care in the Netherlands. The Fit4Surgery foundation informs healthcare workers, patients, helps hospitals with the implementation of prehabilitation, executes lobby, initiates, and supports scientific research. And therefore, we need financial support. The board and most personnel of our foundation have daily jobs as healthcare workers and work for the foundation voluntarily. I'm participating in Bike MS since last year (2023) with my husband and our family to honor the memory of my beloved Father-in-Law, Tom, who passed away last year after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. Tom, while soft spoken and reserved, was the most helpful and loving husband and father a family could ask for. Tom is survived by his wife of 32 years, Gloria, their four children, Michael (and wife Carol), Thomas, Jeffrey (and wife Hannah), and Andrew, his parents, Owen and Doris, and siblings Robert and Kathy. Even as MS gradually took away his mobility and independence, Tom remained positive and grateful for each day he had with his family. By raising funds for the National MS Society through Bike MS, I hope to play a small part in advancing research to find a cure and provide support for those living with MS.
